The first footage from Annihilation, the new thriller from Ex Machina director Alex Garland, has hit the internet. The film stars Natalie Portman as the head of a group of female scientists; who venture into an environmental disaster zone in order to save her husband played by Oscar Isaac.

“I found the atmosphere incredibly strong and I liked the kind of dream state that it created and put me in,” the director told Entertainment Weekly about reading the novel for the first time. “It had all sorts of qualities that I found really interesting. I thought immediately, Yes, I’d like to try this.”

Annihilation is adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s 2014 surprise-hit sci-fi novel. It is about a biologist who embarks on a research expedition after her husband returns from a similar one in a bizarrely altered state. The trailer opens with a shot of a five-woman team walking across a wide field and also into a strange barrier. Beyond the translucent wall is Area X; a lush, surrealistic world cut off from our own, in which seems like nature has returned in some bizarre ways. Furthermore we then see Portman’s character back in a clean room, being questioned about what she saw on her mission in that world.

Annihilation is due for release on February 23, 2018 via Paramount Pictures. Watch the first trailer below.
